Washington Post-ABC News poll shows Americans torn over raising debt limit

A large majority of Americans say the U.S. economy would probably suffer serious harm if Congress fails to give the federal government more borrowing authority. But barely half support raising the government?s debt limit, even if lawmakers also sharply cut spending.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that 55 percent of Democrats and half of Republicans and independents support a debt-limit deal that includes a steep reduction in the size of government. But 37 percent of Republicans, a third of independents and nearly a fifth of Democrats say they are against raising the debt limit, under any circumstances.

Work, Family, and Managerial Attitudes and Practices in the European Workplace: Comparing Dutch, British, and Slovenian Financial Sector Managers

Managers are key actors shaping employees’ capabilities to utilize work–life policies. However, most research on managers’ implementation of these policies has been conducted in liberal welfare states and ignores the impact of institutional context. In this study, we situate managers within specific workplace and national layers of context. We investigated how managers in financial organizations in the Netherlands, UK, and Slovenia talk about the utilization of work–life policies. Managers’ discourses stressed disruption and dependency considerations in these case studies, as in the US research. However, a further management discourse of the moral case or right thing to do also emerged. The lack of resources for replacing staff on leave creates disruption and reduces managers capability to support the use of work–life policies, even when they are statutory or if managers are inclined be supportive (dependency or moral argument). This is likely to impact on parents' capabilities.

Senators add voices to House rebuke of Obama over Libya campaign

Updated 9:35 p.m.

President Obama?s hopes that the Senate would vote to support the military campaign in Libya seemed to be fading Wednesday. Instead, the same kind of discontent that led the House to rebuke Obama over Libya last week seems to be spreading to Congress? other chamber.

Two senators on Wednesday introduced a resolution, which largely mirrors the one passed Friday in the House, stating that Obama ?has failed to provide Congress with a compelling rationale? for the conflict. Legislators from both parties have criticized Obama for not obtaining congressional authorization before sending U.S. troops to join the international force against Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.
